Steps To Help You Reclaim Found Money

By Frank Cole

The thrill that comes with finding lost cash is unrivaled. This is particularly when you do not remember losing it in the first place. Now that you have found unclaimed cash; congratulations are in order. You may be feeling richer already. While you are likely to feel great at the moment for finding missing cash, you should still take the necessary steps to reclaim found money.

Each state oftentimes has different criteria for claiming unclaimed monies in your name. In that regard, there is no single solution that fits all situations. That notwithstanding, the first step to take in reclaiming your cash is visiting the relevant website. If you do not know where to begin, the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators has a website with links to most state sites where you can claim your cash.

Once you find the missing cash in your name plus the right website, the second most important step will involve getting your documents ready. You do not expect to claim for the money without verifying your identity. Although different states have their requirements, you may want to prepare your state issued identification like your driving license. Proof of social security number will also be a necessary requirement.

Besides the documents above, you may still be required by your state to verify the address to the property you are claiming. For the most part, people use a utility bill. However, your current address is a requirement in most states. In other words, the state will need that you prove full identity and address for them to confirm that you are the genuine recipient to the unclaimed cash.

Once you have checked the relevant site and have prepared all the documents they need, the next stage is where most people enjoy. You can now file your claim in order to have the lost cash transferred to your account. But before you do that, a good rule of thumb is to carefully go through the claim instructions on the website. You may want to make sure your state allows electronic submission of documents.

Once you have found the missing cash and submitted your documents either through snail mail or online, you can now wait for the check to arrive. This, unfortunately, varies widely according to the state. Some states only take two weeks from the time you filed the claim, while others may take more than six months. In some cases, you may not know the amount you will get until the check arrives.

Do not leave any stone unturned when checking whether you are a beneficiary to any unclaimed cash. As such, it is recommended not to limit the search with the site of NAUPA. Use other online resources and check with all the states to which you have been a resident in the past to ensure you are missing out on any chance.

You can always search for other names apart from yours. Some are intrigued to find that they are benefactors to cash that was owed to their parents. Furthermore, do not limit your search to state treasuries. Consider checking the Internal Revenue Service for tax refunds.
