Cities are defined by their sky scrappers. The Millenium Tower Boston seeks to give another image to Massachusetts upon completion. The project started as an attempt to utilize the space once occupied by Filenes Flagship store. The process of construction has been challenging but is nearing completion. It is expected to standout among others in the city because of its unique design.
Upon completion, it is designed to offer residential, commercial and office space. The project is expected to cost about 700 million dollars. It is currently being undertaken by Vornado in partnership with Gale international. They seek to transform the site where Filenes once stood.
The 39 story building is expected to hold a dynamic combination of clients on each section. Some of the space is designed to hold a 280-room hotel. There is room for a restaurant with a sitting capacity of 125 guests. 475,000 square feet or 44,100 meter square are reserved for office space. Dynamic tenancy is expected to provide an incredible living and working area.
The space reserved for commercial purposes is 300,000 square feet or 28,000 meters. Residential condos are a combination of 2 and 3 bedroom spaces. There is a park adjacent to the building that will also be used by tenants within the complex.
The original plans were abandoned after the initial investors lacked funds. Some sections had taken off including excavations. This left gaping holes on site and abandoned structures formally owned by the original store. Some of them date back to 1950-1970s. Construction permits were suspended by authorities in Boston after the site was abandoned.
In 2012, Millennium Partners revived the project by seeking approval for a different design. It involves two buildings that will offer 1.2 million square feet of space. This still included a combination of office, commercial and residential sections. The new partners opened a new era for life at the site.
One tenant who changed the fortunes of the building was Arnold Worldwide. The firm agreed to lease a large section and signed a contract in 2013 April 13. This gave life to the project and paved way for the ground breaking ceremony that followed on 17th September 2013. The ceremony was graced by Menino M Thomas, the former mayor of the city.
The record for the largest concrete pour within the city was broken on 26th April 2014 when six hundred trucks drained six hundred cubic yards of concrete. This was for the slab on which the tower will stand. Another tenant who has taken space and waiting for completion is Roche Brothers grocery store.
Upon completion the complex will take position among the three tallest residential towers. Tenants have a chance to choose between one, two and three bedroom condos. Even though the lobby is facing Franklin Street, the address has been listed as 426 Washington Street.
Completion of this complex is waited because of the breath of new life it will inject in the area. The area is known for its gated lifestyle but is bound to experience something new. The architects behind the design are also credited for their work on Flatiron Building in the heart of Manhattan and Union Station that is in D. C.
