Building A New Home

By Hedrick Lepsch

If you have a young child or baby in your family, there are many other things that you need to consider when trying to find a home to purchase. Instead of only considering the needs and wants of you and your spouse, you must also consider the safety and needs your baby. As you look around for the perfect home, it is a good idea to look for a home that is situated in an area with other families. When you are surrounded by other families, it is more likely that your neighbors will watch out for your child when he or she is out and about.

The first thing you will need to evaluate is the nursery. The nursery is the place where your child will probably spend the majority of his or her time. As a result, you will want to make sure that there are no threats to him or her in this room at all. The first thing you will want to evaluate in the nursery is the crib.

Cribs are required to meet a certain safety standard now. If they type of crib you have was recently recalled, you can often get it replaced by the company for free with one that is considered to be completely safe. The American Society for Testing and Material is the association that determines whether or not a particular kind of crib is safe. They have stated that the slats on the sides must be no wider than 2 3/8 inch apart.

In addition, the mattress must fit tightly in the crib so that only a finger can be slid between the mattress and the side. These are precautions to make sure that your son or daughter's head does not get caught in anything. It is also recommended that the crib does not have corner posts as clothing could get caught on them. This association also states that bumpers can be used when the baby is small, but should be taken out when the baby can stand on them as it may lift them up high enough that they will be able to fall out.

The third thing you will want to make sure is take care of are any long window blinds and treatments. If these things are too long they could get tangled around your young child and he or she could suffocate. In addition, the child could pull and yank on these strings until the shade come down. The impact of the falling shade could harm your son or daughter.

When you are building your home you want to make sure that you start early on the process. You should be sure that you are applying for your permits as soon as you can to be sure that you are getting them approved quickly. Make sure that you are taking the time that you need to understand which paperwork you will have to fill out. Take the time that you need to understand how you are going to fill it all out properly so that you can be approved.

These covers are designed so that children cannot remove them and play with the outlet. Outlets are quite dangerous and you need to prevent your son or daughter from getting electrocuted. Keep in mind that the more complex the plug is, the safer it will be. However, the more complex it is, the more frustrating it may be to take out and use as well.

You will want to make sure that these things all have a place where they can be safely put away. The next hazardous room that you will want to carefully evaluate is the kitchen. The kitchen also contains many dangers for your child. The first thing you should look at though, is the high chair.

Make sure that the safety straps are properly working and that you use them so that your son or daughter does not climb out and fall off. In addition, you should be careful when heating formula. If you heat it too much, it could burn your baby. It is also a very good idea to invest in drawer stops and cabinet locks so that your child does not get into things that he or she should not, such as the knife drawer. Again, cleaning supplies and medicines should be kept way out of reach. As you do these things, you will be making sure that your new home is not a dangerous place for your child.
