The most awaited London 2012 Olympic Summer game's renowned Olympics Flame March has already passed through South London including Mitcham Town Centre, Colliers Wood and Wimbledon on 23rd July 2012. The torch has travelled through the Wimbledon Common and Wimbledon Village. The London Organising Committee for the Olympics and Paralympics Games had decided and announced the route of the torch across the city; also, they had clearly indicated the celebrities and residents who had to carry the Olympics Flame through the streets of the borough. All in all, the route included four party areas and performance spaces.
Certainly, the local councillors were very proud to be a part of this ceremony for the London Olympic and Paralympics Games. It is a unique opportunity for all local schools, businesses, and residents to witness the Olympic Torch. The local councillors came forward to encourage all the residents and employees in Merton to participate in this historic event.
Most of the local businesses were pleased to see the successful turn out for the torch relay. This also has a positive impact on the local economy. The major reason can be the increasing number of property renters in the area over the course of the Olympics Games.
The Olympic torch relay also included a special transfer on London's tube network. The transfer was complete without any hassle and it was definitely a relief to the game organisers. John Light, a 64 year old tube train driver carried the torch in the designated train cab, adorned with the Olympic rings for the 67th day of the torch relay.
After serving for the London Underground since 1963, Mr Light was chosen for this honorable work. He mentioned that it was his pleasure to be a part of the transportation of the Olympic flame. He did mention about his 49 years service for London Underground after his spectacular Tube journey with the renowned Olympics Torch.
Later, the torch travelled from Kingston upon the beautiful river of Thames to Ealing. During this latest nationwide torch relay, Kew Gardens was one amongst the morning stops. Local and international Olympics volunteers have created a beautiful 50m long Olympics rings at the Gardens made up of 20,000 plants. This spectacular ring is also visible from the Heathrow Airport's flight path.
Oliver Golding, the famous British tennis player, was also a part of this event. Other popular torchbearers include the skier Chemy Alcott, double Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell, and singer Katy B along with music producer Mark Ronson. Cracknell started the day as the first torchbearer as he ran with the torch in Kingston's Hook Community Centre. Skeleton racer Adam Pengilly also carried the flame in Kingston.
Famous member of the Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney was invited by musician Mark Ronson to perform at the London Olympics closing ceremony. This Grammy award-winning producer and singer Katy B joined the torch relay at Brunel University in west London on the 67th day of the torch relay. All who participated in this historic moment are definitely overjoyed by the honour.
